OK, so the Chevy plan is scraped. Stiles, among others, is right in pointing out that building up the stock VW transmission to take an all-out Chevy V6 would be cost prohibitive.

So, I'm now looking into, a very sure of, a Toyota MR2. Not only is this already a mid-engine, rearwheel drive platform, but it comes with a five-speed manual (usually) transmission. Plus, if I get a running car with a naturally aspirated engine, I'll save some money AND be able to bolt up my own turbo - which will make more power then a factory turbo engine would.

I really like this plan, more then the others, for a number of reasons. First, it's a Toyota engine/transmission - which means it'll last forever (Toyota makes the best drivetrains - I don't care what anyone says. Just consider that a STOCK Supra engine's bottom end can handle up to a 1000hp! eeek ). Two, it's the cheapest route considering I can get a running MR2 that's been in an accident for a thousand, maybe two grand. Three, everything is hooked up and ready to go. All I'd have to do is fabricate a chassis for the VW, bolt the engine/transaxle to that chassis, plumb some fuel lines, a throttle cable, and hook up the brakes. Naturally, I'd have to hook up the computer and all, but if I have the whole donor car available, then I can even run A/C and also the wiring would be made so much easier.
