So the catfishing was a complete fucking bust. On the other hand, I did get to play with the most interesting of North American pit vipers; the Cottonmouth! (Wait, is it a pit viper? I'm pretty sure it is, but if it is it's the only aquadic pit viper I've ever heard of....and thus dispells the myth of my being a snake expert).
Anyways, the fucker was big; at least five feet. Which means he was old. And quite docile. When he started to get pissed, though, I packed up my gear and moved upstream. Best to leave those who can kill me alone.
Wow, so I'm hella excited. I'm definitely going to Calaveras Lake Saturday night to do some catfishing. Apparently the channel catfishing, red drum and striped bass fishing are excellent this week.
But I'm even more excited about finding out about Medina Lake just north of San Antonio. I've been there before, twice, and the second time I was tripping acid with a friend and smoking pot and driving around backroads in my truck. We started hallucinating BAD and seeing ghosts and demons and werewolves and vampires and shit. This was made worse by the fact that I SOMEHOW ended up driving OVER spillway on an emergency access road (well, concrete SLAB is more like it) literally the width of my truck; I had two inches on either side of my truck - it was even a bridge designed for trucks to be on. This isn't the scary part, either (haha, yeah, the evil hallucinations and rickety concrete slab were just the beginning) - the scary part was the fact that half a foot below the concrete slab was the fastest moving water I have EVER seen in my life.
Imagine, if you will, that you're in a beat up old truck, blasted out of your mind on LSD, having a very bad serious of hallucinations, smoking pot to calm down but it's only making it worse, and half a foot below you is water flowing at a hundred miles an hour. Not to mention your best friend (who is supposed to know the area) is in the passenger seat SCREAMING and totally freaking out and trying to grab the wheel.
Yeah, so I kind of have a negative bias towards the area.
Hark, I found out that Medina Lake has carp, many kinds of gar (a type of ugly alligator/fish hybrid), and EELS, as well as a ton of other cool stuff. Carp. I have never caught a carp before (or a gar, but you need to hunt those with bows and arrows), and would really like to. Eels make really good bait, believe it or not. Why Medina Lake has carp, gar and eels when none of the other lakes in the area do, I have no fucking idea. It kind of blows my mind, since they'll all connected.
OK, so I'm sick, sunburned and tired. Forgive the length of this opus. I'll let ya'll know how my trip to Calaveras went, as well as my soon to be constant trips to Medina Lake.

Carp, to those that do not know, are like a cross between a Goldfish and a catfish; literally. They like super-sized goldfish with wiskers, and apparently they fight more than anything when hooked (don't worry, vegan friends of mine; carp are the strongest fish around - you can literally leave them out of water, in the sun, for a whole day and they won't die. They're the Super Man of the fish world).
