It occurs to me that maybe someone out there has some knowledge of Plato and the Republic. I'm writing a paper on the use of myths and their value in the Republic. And I've decided to describe myth in terms of it's virtue or proper function. Below is the definition I have chosen.
"Let us define the virtue of myths in four ways, it must:
(1) tell a narrative or a story,
(2) be used to convey a belief,
(3) embody part of the psyche of a culture and
(4) connect to an ultimate truth for the teller and listener."
It seems good to me so far. And I haven't run into any major hurdles yet. But the question remains: what do you think is the proper function of myth???

It's pretty basic, and I'm sure there's more to it, but that's easy to back up.
