I think it depends on how you approach your art and what you are doing whether you benefit from less competition in a small market versus more opportunity in a big city. I've known photographers who broke into the profession in small towns. One of them travels 2/3 of the year doing fine art work for commercial clients, making a shitload of money (you'd probably enjoy checking out his work here). The other guy didn't pay much attention to usage rights, didn't pay the IRS at first and ended up owing them 60K, but mainly went under (I assume since his site is no longer up) in spite of getting regular work from the main clients there... because there was just the University, the hospital, and a few small design firms, that's it. He couldn't break through at the big agencies in Richmond or NYC and basically couldn't get any jobs big enough to help him deal with his financial fuck ups. He was producing great stuff and busy, but stuck in a small town with a kid.

Anyway just to mention about SGSF... I really did get the feeling through that group that SG is all about being a band of misfits. I mean I have to admit I certainly didn't feel like I "fit in" with them. But I do believe that's because I didn't hang out enough and it would be a psychological thing for me or whomever for a while moreso than it would be a real problem. Have you read anywhere on here about the Proms? I guess it was Tuffy of SGSF who started the first one, and then people started doing one every year in Toronto (which I would love to go to if I weren't still dirt ass poor). Think about it- if you didn't go to your prom in high school you were a misfit... belies the nature of most SG folk.

I just started watching Galactica again. Are you still boycotting it, so to speak? I wonder how that Caprica spin-off is.

Funny I didn't even remember SG being headquartered in Portland. When I signed on there were about 175 SGs, with the bay area and LA having a pretty good number as well as Oregon. That was when Katie was around and I remember her being in LA. She was definitely one of my fav SGs and I thought she wrote the best entires. Speaking of back in the day, ever hear what the fuss was all about that a bunch of girls like Stormy all left at the same time? She was another one that I really dug. But anyway there's no shortage now either. And although body mods have gone mainstream, I think at the level most of the more iconic SGs, more of the most popular ones (though far from all perhaps) have them- they and all of the site continue to represent a counter-culture.

I just watched the trailer of Caprica they had on iTunes... didn't see much of a connection with BSG. It's set-up like a futuristic crime-drama, and suppose the connection is there ultimately. I don't know, it was too short a trailer but check it out for yourself. wink
