My internet connection has been wonky for a week, just cutting out intermittently when the urge struck it. Of course there's no one to talk to on the weekends, then it was back to work; it wasn't until today I got the chance to talk to someone. His thought was that a needed an updated modem, a brand new one instead of a firmware update on the one I have. He told me I could go to the nearest store and pick it up to have it today and shoving aside the software reinstall I needed to do with my Mac (short version: the other one I took back wasn't faulty, started having same problem with the replacement one and a second trip to the Apple Store had some kid tell me it was software related, a corrupt file, and to fix it I had to reinstall everything and reimport nothing from my backups, wiping out my data/personal info) to pick it up. Got back home and the included ethernet cable didn't work. Within two hours I found out that an updated modem didn't fix my problems 
I'm typing this now wondering if I'll have access to post it when the time comes. It's precarious to download updates for my newly installed OS when I don't know if the connection will drop and the download gets nixed. So, in two words...
Fuck Embarq.
I know I had problems with Time Warner Cable/Road Runner when in SC but these people are complete idiots (though I bear in mind TWC had one lady who was their "Mac person" and her expertise (I use that word loosely) was with OS 9, four OS changes from the present one. Suffice to say, she wasn't much help. But these Embarq people... they always tell me it's an error on my side of things. So they make me do all the things I've already done (power cycle the modem, check connections, restart computer, oh you're using a wireless router? no, no, no, plug a hard line into one computer) before saying, "let me checking something here," and BLAM... things start working again. Why the fuck didn't they listen to me and do that thing there?
Fuck Embarq.
Fuck DSL.
Fuck living in the sticks.
Fuck losing the lottery.
Fuck having to stay up all night.
Fuck the hospital (whom I owe money and work for).
Fuck not finding anything worthwhile in life.
Just fuck it.
