Today is another day in my not so exciting life.
I went to school this morning, and started with my intro to sociology class. My teacher has to be one of my favourites, very energetic and entertaining. We talked about the idea of "normal", and what influences our perception of it. Basically, religion, culture, peers, our family, work, media, etc., influence us as a society on what is and isn't normal. What peaked my interest the most was what society considers normal throughout our stages of life. Once you reach a certain age you are expected to find a mate, settle down, get married, have children, grow old, retire, then eventually die. It struck me sitting in class that these are all things that I want someday, but is it because I've been influenced to see all these things as normal? It kind of makes me think about what I actually want out of life.
My next class was kind of boring, it's statistics - methods and analysis, so I'll just skip it because I don't think I really took in anything that could be considered interesting. Other than be a skeptic!
And, for my last rant about interesting things I've learned today, Personality. In our first class, our teacher had us draw a picture of ourselves, and write beside it "I am a student that is taking Personality this term", and sign our name at the top of the page. He handed them back today telling us that he analyzed the way we drew ourselves, and on our writing, and from that analysis, wrote us each a note explaining our personality.
Mine said "You enjoy change and variety in your life, but do not like to have things change too dramatically. You are fairly ambitious but sometimes worry if you are making the right choices in your life. Sometimes you are insecure, but you don't think that other people realize this. You think a lot about your personal relationships because they are very important to you. You really value others' opinions and strive to obtain others' approval. How well does this analysis describe you?" He asked us to rate it on a scale of 1 to 5, and everybody except for one guy gave a 3 or higher, saying it described them decently. He then told us that we all had the exact same description on our paper of our personality. Because he made the statement so general, everybody was able to relate to it and think it accurate. We then discussed how its the same with horoscopes, people read them and relate them to their lives because of how general they are.
Anyway, enough rambling I think. I love school!
