Sooooo. It has been a long time since I posted. Why? Well, I keep trying to think of something that other people might actually be interested in reading. Many a time I have found myself posting, then deleting or just not finishing because I come to the conclusion that, really, it is not interesting to anyone but me. So, I thought a post about visitors to my yard would be something people could appreciate and enjoy!
The American Goldfinch. Frequent visitors to my front yard and back. In the front, they like to feed from my thistle feeders, and in the back you can frequently see them perched on the Purple Coneflowers I planted or the Bergmont.
Ruby-throated Humming Bird. Only visits from about July to the end of September. If you sit next to the feeder and do not move, they will feed literally inches from your face. When I first did this, I discovered that they "chirp" pretty much all the time, something I never knew! And watching them fight each other (they seem to be rather territorial) is like watching a live action version of the old video game "Joust."

A Blue Jay fledgeling. You know how puppies sometimes have feet to big for their bodies and they trip over them? This guy was like that. Big ole goofy bird who did not quite know how to fly and hop.
The Northern Flicker. A member of the woodpecker family, they are a hoot to watch cause they can run forwards and backwards up and down the tree trunk. Also interesting,here in Kansas the underside of their wings are yellow. The further west you go, their wing undersides are red. These guys also like to use my roof vents for drums.
There are Western Medowlarks and Downy Headed Woodpeckers as well, hopefully I can catch them on film this year. The Meadowlark is particularly hard, as the blend in really well in the native grasses and flowers I planted in back.
