1970-1971

the beatles broke up in 1970. i was born in 1971. disco and funk were young.

four bands essentially define the late 1960's and all of the 1970s for me. there are others, but these four heavyweights are classic rock cornerstones ;

the rolling stones, the who, led zeppelin and pink floyd ; a buncha' fucking brits.

in 1969 the rolling stones released the all-time classic 'let it bleed'. 1970 was a live album, and their 1971 studio release was 'sticky fingers'. another mega-classic.

'dead flowers' from 'sticky fingers'

the who also released an epic album in 1969, 'tommy'. then two live records in 1970 and a studio album and a compilation in 1971 ; 'who's next' and 'meaty, beaty, big and bouncy'. not a bad year.

'baba o' riley' from 'who's next'

meanwhile, led zeppelin was lost in a drug-induced haze. i've heard their live shows sucked, but their studio work was amazing. 'led zeppelin III' came out in 1970 and 'led zeppelin IV' came out in 1971 and established them as one of the greatest bands ever. jimmy page is my favorite guitarist ever, and the stone-coldest riffer to walk the earth.

'out on the tiles' from 'led zeppelin III'

lost in a completely different type of drug-induced haze, pink floyd released 'atom heart mother' in 1970 and 'meddle' in 1971. 'meddle' is one of my favorite albums. pink floyd was its own genre of music, just an incredible band.

When I used to play drums, my practice set included a lot of Zeppelin, including The Ocean and Achilles' Last Stand. Zeppelin II was my first addiction - I damn near wore out my dad's LP.
