Anyone wanna help an old dog learn a new trick? I was given an acoustic guitar for a gift (been wanting one and a good friend obliged), but have no idea where to start in learning. Any self-taught guitarists out there with advice? confused

i know all of four chords. i've even forgotten the names of them. if you can get what is called "tablature" it will show you where to put your fingers on the strings to make the appropriate notes. you can see examples in some of the guitar mags.

Hmm...my recommendation, which you're not gonna like, is take a few lessons smile Really, having someone show you a few things is a huge time-saver in terms of picking up some basics (especially if you are interested in learning to play classical). A reasonably decent teacher can also tell you pretty quickly if you have any setup issues that need to be addressed (learning to play on an improperly set up guitar can be immensely frustrating and discouraging). Take a few lessons, learn how to hold the instrument and where to put your hands and fingers, how to hold a pick or use your fingers, and then decide if you want to strike out on your own or stay with (or find another) instructor. I took a lot of lessons as a kid. Did I need 'em all? Maybe not all of 'em, but the jump start of having someone around that knew what they were doing got me a lot farther faster. Best of luck, and if I can be of any help on your quest, feel free to drop a line.

No Tsunami Bomb for me. frown

Mixed feelings though as I will be going to Portland. Initially just a week at a time, maybe after a week or two going to two or three weeks again at a time. smile

Back from Chicago. Interesting time. My ex (or soon to be) and I have somehow managed to stay friends. We went to Chicago for her to interview with this company that sends you to Japan for a year to teach English.

I spent the day in the hotel room working (it's nice telecommuting sometimes), then we went out that night. Also spent the next day...

Heading back home from the Windy City. A lot of the things I liked about Chicago closed down since I was here last. I've never been a city guy, so I always try to find certain things I like ... Disney Quest ... gone ... Eerie World Cafe ... gone ... Buhkara ... gone. Going to the Navy Pier and probably by a museum, then...

More random pics ... this is an old bike I used to have. I got it from a guy who was getting a bigger one and his wife wouldn't let him have both. It's a custom AMEN Savior frame (made for Harley's) with a Honda motor. Always meant to take the motor off, find a decent Harley one (you either get a good Harley or...

that is the coolest gas tank on your bike! what size engine is it?
remyx:
ah, so you did sell it. so now what are you looking at?

I'd be right beside you in the bike shop if I could squeeze my bank account for more cash. with the crazy gas prices, a motorcycle would make for cheaper commuting. i've putting off getting one for about 5 years, one more year might not kill me... frown
