I was thinking today...I still have trouble working on one particular project and even when I stay with one I get distracted by sites like reddit.com or this one.
I rarely have/had trouble focusing on e.g. leveling a character in a computer RPG though. This makes me wonder if if would be possible to invent some kind of reward system with experience points for those activities. I imagine something like this:
I rarely have/had trouble focusing on e.g. leveling a character in a computer RPG though. This makes me wonder if if would be possible to invent some kind of reward system with experience points for those activities. I imagine something like this:
- activities are split into several categories, e.g. work (for money), chores (around the house), projects (productive use of free time), procrastination (other use of free time),...
- each category has a multiplier, productive ones have a positive one, the others negative
- each task in a category gives xp per time spent doing it and a bonus for finishing it (to avoid the incentive for taking your time)
- tasks in the same project (for programming projects,...) give more xp than those in a new project to avoid my tendency to switch to new projects all the time
- xp are multiplied by the category multiplier to get the final value and are then added up to a total
- for activities that have to happen every day/week/... there is a malus for missing them
- for activities that have to happen but without a strict deadline the bonus is reduced each day and turns into a malus after a while
The main problems I could see with this are how to track all those numbers, especially how to track the time for smaller tasks and tasks not done near a computer.
Well, anyway, I just thought I would put that idea out there. Maybe someone has an idea on how to improve it or knows about similar ideas tried in the past.
