After a long absence, today is a double blog day. Feel free to read the earlier entry for prior thoughts. smile

My first kiss with a girl was a debacle. Really, it was such a disaster that the story isnt worth retelling. But sometimes, a little humility is good for the soul.

Her name was Carrie and she was a very pretty girl with an...

Two days ago I found myself in a hot tub with close friends, two blocks from the beach, in a rainstorm, watching the wind lash the tops of palm trees in the distance. I started to laugh, when my friend Morgan asked me what was so funny. I told her that I was laughing because of the beauty of that moment, observing the endless wonder...

A few days ago my adventure consisted of a trip to Los Angeles Museum of Neon Art, a place that had intrigued me for years given the citys long and prolific relationship with all that is gaudy and all that is automotive. One of my first accomplishments upon becoming unemployed was to figure out the days when each local museum offered free admission; most do,...

I just live a block from there, and I have always been so curious- but it never said sex and sensuality to me- it said 1992 to me, it said slouch socks and french rolling and bel biv devoe. so I haven't gone, but I think I will now smile

ps. for the record, i still think Bel Biv Devoe is rad.

A friend recently asked me to tell her about my happiest memories. It was an odd request, if only because I don't often take the time to make lists like this. But I wanted to provide an earnest reply and began writing for myself some of these recollections. Now I'd like to share one of them with you.

Summer, 1986. Kobe, Japan.

I lived nearly...

Insects buzz.
It seems that there's in everybody's life a day, when insects buzzes don't sound the same anymore to you. After that people start calling you an "adult "or a "grownup".
bob_dobalina:
brilliant!

whenever my grandfather took me to playgrounds in japan it was strange because i could totally push the other kids around. either they were too nice or too wimpy for my brash americanism.

Reconnect

Ive spent the last several months contemplating the relationships I keep with my family, at times marveling at the distance thats somehow crept between me and the kin. The reason, though, is as simple as me putting space between myself and the others. Intimacy between each of us is hard to find. Its easier to remain at arms length than open up to the...

Your Aunt Beverly is a wise woman-- my aunts and uncles (and there are a whole pack of them) all have kids, therefore nieces and nephews are a dime-a-dozen in my family. I used to be and for the most part still am the strange one, so my long absences and silences don't even raise an eye.

For me, it's all about finding right relationship with the members of my family-- it isn't the same for every one of them. My brother (DC2020) is someone I could live with and/or see every day. My father I could see regularly and be good to go. My mother? Not so much. So for me it's finding the level of intimacy or connection that works for each relationship, and not trying to fit my reality into the tiny little box of familial/social expectation!
prettyb0y:
You are very brave to "take proactive steps". Those are important barriers to break down, and I wish you the best of luck. Family is one of the most important things in the world to me, yet there are things I haven't shared with mine. Things I SHOULD share. I keep slapping myself in the head and going "Bakatada!", but I can't bring myself to talk about things. I love them dearly and just don't want to worry them. Like you said, "those who know your weaknesses more intimately than anybody else on the planet".

Thank you for sharing. smile

What a stunner of a weekend. Within an hour of reconnecting with a dear friend, I learned Friday that I would be laid off from my job by the end of this week, file for unemployment, and receive two weeks worth of back pay. This all came quite unexpectedly, to say the least.

But I am not fazed. Yes, it throws off a number of...

A well-known Buddhist koan goes like this: Does a dog have a Buddha-nature? As with most koans, the answer isnt nearly as important as the process of meditation and reflection to determine an answer. But when I look at my dog, Chavez, that answer is obvious.

Like many domesticated canines, Chavez has been spoiled by his owner. I never intended to get him hooked on...

I've always loved D&B, but don't have very deep stacks for it. Most of the D&B records I have are four or five years old (or more). I started there for this mix, because of the Ming the Merciless quote about destroying planet Earth at the start of the first track (Hive).

I am on myspace-- cklarock, but I might as well not be, because the interface is so poor that I rarely visit. MySpace just annoys me, and the signal-to-noise ratio if you start following click-throughs just kills me.

Keep my email addy, and I've been considering dual-blogging here and somewhere else. I'm even considering building a blog for my own site, but will probably go with Moving Type or something like that.
tororo:
Intentionally or not, your story about Chavez had, to me, some of the effects of a koan.

Sort of;
It could sound like something a bit grandiloquent to say.

At least, I now have a name for this very special look in somebody's eyes.

My father has always been a tough nut to crack, coming from the school of walking softly while carrying a big stick. As such, hes been a difficult man to become intimate with for anybody save my mother. She and I have gotten along fabulously for years, but not the same with pops. He just doesnt know how to open up.

Thats why it was...

i'll probably be leaving the crib around 6:30 or 7 on saturday.

just a word of caution.. i'm not sure if its the best idea to come off a multi-month layoff to paddle out in the biggest swell we've received this summer. also, i'm kinda reluctant to loan you the longboard to use as boards that size tend to get snapped in waves that big. but the minigun is still at your disposal.

edited to add: there's gonna be a really good outdoor party on saturday night.

These days I wake up at 5:30 in the morning to swim at the Pasadena Rose Bowl facility for an hour and a half. No doubt its a struggle each day to convince myself that the exercise is worth the trouble when I could otherwise be comfortably asleep. The task is made no easier by the fact that the sky is still dark from the...

I wrote the following journal entry in response to an entry written by cklarock. It seemed like a waste not to post it here, so I offer this up for your reading pleasure.

What I found particularly interesting was CKs response:

That is a FANTASTIC story. You karmically took that beating so that the woman at the bar didn't have to take worse. Because...

Until now, Ive expressed my interest in the possibility of attending medical school to only a handful of people. Now its time to make it more public.

There. Ive said it. Im considering attending medical school.

No, not a desire to attend back when I was in college, but right now. Today. Throw my career away and start anew. No question this is a weighty...

Ok, so i just wanted to let you know that the site that you posted in Sophie's journal was actually something that circulated aruond the area that i live/work in. In fact, I work at an art store and we were like huge on distributing those post cards. I made one, but it's a secret.... wink I just wonder how many people that picked those up are the same folks that came into my shop.... confused

God, did I really wake up at 5:30 this morning?

Its now my second day since returning to the masters swim class. I asked for an ass kicking and Im getting it in spades. I managed to swim nearly a mile today before I became too frustrated and quit after 35 minutes. See, many of the people masochistic enough to show up this early seem...

Right on, dude. Don't quit! You'll blow past those times eventually.

Take this dude I'm training right now. When he first came to me, I had him doing a circut of 30 seconds jump rope, 1 minute rest for 3 reps. It kicked his ass. Eight weeks later, he's doing circuts of 2 minutes with 30 seconds rests. Not exactly world-class, but the best shape of his adult life so far, and getting better.

He started and was slobbering and shaking off of 10 hindu pushups, but recently set his max reps at 35. In fact, we tested him at 3 weeks into training and again at the sixth week, and he increased his reps in each exercise, but most importantly did the whole routine in literally half the time. Like woah. So he's kicking ass and taking names.

Re: visual effects, I totally get all that. I've worked around film and video enough to know a bit about green screens, getting keys, artifacting and halos, etc.; I'm not an expert, but I'm conversant.

I would have tried to cover the window with matte green tape. smile

In fact, this weekend in St. Louis, my friends produce a TV show that uses green-screens on the set for compositing, and Sophie and I totally meant to get our pictures taken in front of them, so I could do some fun photoshopping, but it never happened. C'est La Fun.
