my life is kind of boring, which is why i dont usually have much to say and end up doing things like tournaments with fictional characters. that in mind, here is a list of my 20 favorite movie characters...several of which you will recognize from the villain tournament. unless of course you were one of the people who ignored my journal for that month and a half.

20. Sgt. Oddball (Donald Sutherland) - Kelly's Heroes

okay, so a hippie seems a little out of place in a WWII movie, but still, he was cool as shit.

19. David (Keifer Sutherland) - The Lost Boys

vampire movies are a dime a dozen. but i liked this one, because it was one of the first ones to ever make them really cool. a lot of that had to do with him.

18. Adam & Zack (Scott Wolf & Jay Mohr) - Go

this choice will stand out like a sore thumb from a lot of the rest of the ones on this list, but i absolutely loved this movie, and i thought that the portion involving these two was the best part. they had great on screen chemistry and were absolutely hilarious.

17. V (Hugo Weaving) - V For Vendetta

SUCH a fucking cool ass character. and considering we never see his face, its even more impressive. a perfect blend of style, wit, and asskickery.

16. Harry "Steve" Morgan (Humphrey Bogart) - To Have & Have Not

humphrey bogart was cool in anything he did. thats just who he was. especially in movies where lauren bacall was starring opposite him (she gets a nod here as well) but this role was always my favorite of his.

15. Doc Holiday (Val Kilmer) - Tombstone

he was supposed to be second fiddle to wyatt earp in the movie, but who do you remember from this movie? goddamn right, you remember val kilmer as doc holiday. why? because he had all the best lines and he was so fuckin cool. this exchange sums it up, perfectly...
billy clanton: why, its the drunk piano player. youre so drunk, you cant hit nothin. in fact, youre probably seeing double.
doc holiday: i have two guns...one for each of ya.

14. Moff Tarkin (Peter Cushing) - Star Wars

everyone always loved vader and obiwan and yoda. me, my favorite star wars character was this guy. he was as cold and malicious as they come. come on, he blew up a fucking planet as a show of force. murdering a few billion people in one fell swoop takes some balls.

13. Angel Eyes (Lee Van Cleef) - The Good, the Bad, & the Ugly

angel eyes has a bit of an unfair advantage since hes played by lee van cleef who could wear a dress and sing, "im a little teapot," and still be badass. this movie is my favorite western, and its mostly because of his performance.

12. Willie (Billy Bob Thornton) - Bad Santa

a pitiful, drunken, ugly, self-destructive, and self-loathing cretin, he may be, but damn is he funny in this movie. everything he says is funny, but its not the lines as much as the delivery.

11. Magneto (Sir Ian McKellan) - X-Men series

sir ian is my favorite actor, and when i found out he was playing magneto, i nearly crapped myself. (ditto for his portrayal of gandalf) and he did it perfectly. what really amuses me to no end is that between the x-men movies and the lord of the rings movies, he is one of the biggest action stars of the last several years. and i find much coolness in one of the biggest action stars of the last several years being an old gay english man.

10. Tommy DeVito (Joe Pesci) - Goodfellas

cmon, its joe pesci. little guys who can play badass get bonus badass points. and i know this, because im a little shit. nobody can call anyone funny anymore without this movie being quoted.

9. The Dude (Jeff Bridges) - The Big Lebowski

its funny...i remember seeing this movie in the theater and loving it...it kind of faded into obscurity for a while then developed a cult following. the dude is one of two characters on this list that kind of remind me of myself. and for those of you who have hung out with me. that shouldnt surprise you.

8. Joel Barrish (Jim Carrey) - Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

heres the other character that reminded me of myself. its one of the reasons the movie resonated with me so much, aside from it just being a beautiful and powerful movie. ill grant you that joel and the dude are very much not alike, but im a gemini and i have a split personality...what do you want.

7. Anything played by Robert DeNiro

okay...maybe not everything, but if i did a top 100 list, hed make a lot of fucking appearances...so i figured id simplify things

6. Elizabeth (Madeline Khan) - Young Frankenstein

the only female on the list (dont blame me....blame hollywood for relegating women to love interests in movies) but i LOVE her in this movie. this was my favorite movie growing up and madeline khan was one of my first crushes. RIP

5. Lester Burnham (Kevin Spacey) - American Beauty

kevin spacey was always a favorite of mine, but this movie cemented him onto the "if hes in the movie, ill see it," list. we can even look past the trying to fuck his daughters friend thing, because the character is just so damn likeable.

4. Tony Montana (Al Pacino) - Scarface

six words:
"Say hello to my little friend!"

3. Otis B. Driftwood (Bill Moseley) - The Devil's Rejects

this shouldnt surprise anyone, since i had him as my avatar for a while there. i can thank Sid for introducing me to this one. i had seen House of 1000 Corpses, and thought it was alright, but it didnt blow me away. this one did. and otis has got to go down as one of the biggest badasses in any movie ive ever seen.

2. Gollum (Andy Serkeis) - Lord of the Rings trilogy

gollum has always been a favorite character of mine, years ago, before the movies were even announced. i read the books in like the 5th or 6th grade, and gollum was the character who jumped out at me the most. twisted, tragic, and tortured, he was just such an interesting character. and i was psyched to see him in the movie. i wasnt disappointed.

1. Bill the Butcher (Daniel Day Lewis) - Gangs of New York

THE coolest character ever. i dont care what anyone says. hes brutal, charasmatic, and gets shit done. but the thing that really drew me to the character was his medeival sense of honor in a time about 600 years too late. for a guy who is supposed to be a villain, he displays a lot of integrity, believing that a mans worth is derived from his actions and courage. AND hes got a super cool mustache. you cant beat the mustache.

okay, thats that!
