BootyBadger asked a good question in his current journal, "What's your favorite poem?" That got me thinking of a poem recited to us pledges on Induction Night (a poster with this poem overlaying a waterfall was prominently displayed in the living room, so I'm not divulging any secrets here).
I remembered the last line, "Good friend, I build this bridge for him." That was about it. So into Google it goes...voila! a poem emerges!
The Bridge
An old man going along a highway
Came at the evening, cold and gray,
To a chasm vast and deep and wide,
Where there was flowing a swollen tide.
The old man crossed in the twilight dim.
That swollen stream held no fears for him.
But he paused when safe on the other side
To build a bridge to span the tide.
"Old man," said a fellow pilgrim near,
"You're wasting strength by building here.
Your journey ends with the ending day,
You never again will pass this way.
"You've crossed the chasm deep and wide,
Why build a bridge in the eveing tide?"
The builder lifted his old gray head,
"Good friend, in the path where I have come,
There followeth after me today
A youth whose feet must pass this way.
"This swollen stream that was not naught for me,
To that fair-haired youth may a pitfall be
He too must cross in the twilight dim,
Good friend, I build this bridge for him."
I'm going to go wax nostalgic for my GMI days now...
Im worried if we do come up to mi again that it will be the same shit with his work. when we were up there last time he was working 12, 14, 16 + hours a day and sometimes 7 days a week which is why we never got over to the east side of the state. Luckily now that he has opened an office out here in az he doesn't travel all over during the day and doesn't work those long hours. I dont miss that at all. I would love to come to michigan and actually have time to do some things while we are up there rather then sitting in a rented condo waiting for him to come home from work.
