Its been an interesting weekend. Went out Friday with some friends and didnt get to bed till after 3am. Phone woke me at 0730 and drove 400 miles (round trip) for about a 5 mile hike in torrential rains. As soon as I cleaned up went and met a buddy at the bar, then after party at his place. Had my first experience with a bong. Cant say I thought much of it as I promptly fell asleep.

Overall has been an interesting weekend. One not to repeat anytime soon, but interesting.

- Howdy, and the sailing question...
- I had never sailed on anything but a Sunfish, until I was 29. I was stationed in Panama, and a Warrant I worked with had a little O'Day he kept on a trailer. But he didn't have a trailer hitch, and he knew that I did. So he invited me to go sailing one day. And to bring my truck! So I sailed with him a couple of times, and I really enjoyed it. Then I got transferred to Tennesee. That was '87.
- Got out of the army in '93, worked a little, then in '95/'96 got involved with a schooner sailiing out of Manhattan, took some sailing classes, chartered a little 27 footer in Maine, then crewed a delivery from NY to St Thomas. All in the same year. I was almost 40!
- Since then I've chartered in the Caribbean, crewed on a number of deliverys, transited the Panamz Canal, and been the mate on a tall ship. It kind of gets in your blood!
- And it all started because of a trailier hitch...

- Sailing and Aviation use a lot of the same lingo, use charts/maps and visual or elctronic devices to navigate. Everyone uses GPS now. Both are outside activities, sailing more so. A sail is just a vertical wing, so the mechanics of the "engine" are essentially the same, yay Bernoulli! To be safe in both activities, you have to pay attention and be conservative. Weather is a big factor in both. There were a bunch of new things to learn in sailing, but I was pretty comfortable with the transition, way more so than a newbie just off the street.

ARRR!!!
