I enjoyed the weekend in Palm Springs so much that I'm going back there (weather permitting) on Thursday night. I'm starting to really appreciate the value of sunny/non-snowy areas.

The strong winds cleared out any lousy air that might have been lingering in the Coachella Valley. Of course, it also helped to make HolaGatita queasy as we arrived last Friday night.

I viewed four films during the first weekend of the film festival:

Inland Empire: perhaps David Lynch's oddest film yet---and that says something. I would say that the movie was nearly as good as Mulholland Drive, but Lynch always finds ways to pique my interest. Don't look for any clear narrative flow, of course. And, if you haven't liked his "weirdness" before, this probably isn't the film for you.

In the Pit: a documentary about the construction of an especially long bridge in Mexico City. The concept was solid, but the execution was quite disappointing. What we learn about the protagonists is superficial and incomplete and context regarding the bridge itself is altogether missing.

The Damned Don't Cry: I don't think that technically this, a story of a newly ambitious, embittered woman is a great film, but I did enjoy this immensely. If you can suspend disbelief and see Joan Crawford as a distinctly sexy woman, then all the better! The dialogue of the film seemed tight and flowed quite well. I especially enjoy how much wittier insults were back in a previous era of movies, as shown in this film.

Pan's Labyrinth: We're just over a week into the new year and we already have a strong contender for the most overrated movie of the year. Its predictability was stunning. Its one-dimensional characters were deeply disappointing. And yet the critics love it. I'm baffled.

My hands are so dry these days. Lousy indoor heating. mad Yet only two more days before I can eat here again. Woo-hoo! biggrin

So what's new for you, dear reader?
