Last night was terrible...

I was hanging out with a couple of friends at a coffee shop I always go to when out of nowhere we hear *POP POP POP POP POP* brief pause *POP POP*. I immediately thought someone was having fun with fireworks but my friend AJ from LA went pale and said "No, those were gunshots." We rushed across the street because it sounded like maybe was holding up the liquor store or something. As soon as I got to the street, I saw a man lying on the ground holding his stomach. A girl was frantically speaking on her cellphone and a bum was on a payphone. AJ ripped off his shirt and we attempted to stop the bleeding of the man who had been shot twice: once in the intestinal area and once in the lung. A moment later we heard someone yell "There's a girl in the car!!"

I ran with another friend Ed to the white Explorer. The driver's window was blown out and in the seat was a girl not more than 20 slumped over the wheel. I tried to talk to her to help her regain consciousness, but to no avail. That's when I noticed she was shot a few times. I couldn't tell how many because of all the blood down her shirt. We pulled her from the car and laid her on the ground where we checked her pulse. It was very weak and she wasn't breathing. By this time a Marine had come to the scene and started giving directions. He begun CPR while I ran back to the man. His bleeding was stopped but he started going into shock. AJ was there the whole time talking to him in Spanish telling him it's ok and calm down.

It seemed forever before the cops came, but it was like 5 or 6 minutes (which is still a long time). They took our statements and let us go.

I looked in the paper today for the news, but nothing was mentioned. I hope it's in there tomorrow. The welfare of those vicitims weighs heavily on my shoulders. It was all so surreal...
