Woke up w/a headache this morning.
I've been having these dreams lately about this building. It's in Denver, Colorado. It's somewhere around 14th street and Fillmore...the capitol hill area.
The dream is never the same, but the place is the same. It's one of those brownstone buildings. Old with big trees. Tiny, dirty little alley ways in the back scattered with rubbish and people of questionable intent. Cars parallel parked on the streets. And this dream is always at night.
The entrance is tiny, maybe 3x3 feet. The mailboxes are either to the left of the entrance or right in front. The stairs leading up to the units are to the right. The inside of the building is wooden. Dusty. Dilapidated. Some repairs have been attempted but they are of poor quality.
Each floor of the building has 2 units, one on either side of the stairs. They were once very nice. Huge, open, expansive. At the very top floor is my apartment. I walk up the stairs passed other peoples apartments. Their doors are broken, falling off the hinges. I can see their dusty mattresses on their floors, blankets messy and unkempt. I am so aware of the stairs being made of wood, and the abandoned feel of the place.
I pass by the managers apartment. His is very nice. He's got company and he invites me in to show me the new work he's done on his unit...work which he says he intends to make standard in all the units. He's put custom tile work into the hardwood floors near the fireplace. It looks nice: browns and reds, terra cotta squares. But I don't particularly like it. I tell him I like it and continue up the stairs to my apartment.
The dream stopped before I made it to my apartment, but I know what it looks like cause I've been there before. Huge, open, expansive. Clean. No furniture, empty. Hardwood floors. The apartment is L shaped...well it would have to be...2 units to a floor w/stairs in the middle...it would have to be L shaped.
The kitchen is at the bend in the L. The living room and master bedroom are to the left, more living space and rooms to the right. There's a fireplace to the left of the kitchen. Everything is white. White walls. White appliances. White heating units against the walls. White window panes.
At some point in the dream I go outside. This time it was to let Juno out to potty. But the location of the building was different. Usually it's on the west side of the street, this time it was on the east side. The neighborhood felt more like my sister-in-law's old neighborhood instead of Capitol Hill.
I'm too tired this morning to ponder this but some of the meaning is clear: poor repairs, abandoned, putting effort into the wrong places...oh I'm too tired for this crap.
