"what a thing to do! what a great thing to do. what an honest thing to do there in the studio to take what you know to be true, to hear it, use it and put it in the right place. when they are concerned only with the art that's when it really makes it. miles hears and what he hears he paints with. when...

Ahh...

I have just finished On The Road. Hmm, needless to say this book has greatly affected me. I have an insatiable desire to travel and explore and come across all sorts of surprises both good and bad. I found myself at the end of the book hoping I had missed some pages in the back of the book and there was really more... rats....

cowboy junkies- "mining for gold" don't know why it gets me every time. but that rendition of crying got me the first time... but so did does roy orbison's version, every time. that high note? tears...
with on the road, just read it again. it gets better every time. may i suggest dharma bums as a follow up? although, contrary to what some what sneer at, on the road is his masterpiece in my opinion. " the only ones for me are the mad ones...." that quote made all those roman candle lights go off in my soul...

So...

I saw Patti Smith on friday. I have no words to explain my experience, but I will say this: Patti still rocks just as hard as she ever did and is as humble as ever. She is such a strong reason why rock music rules. Her presence is unmatched. Her power and passion is incredible. It was one of the most inspiring shows I...

she is BEAUTIFUL live. compelling. i felt so enlivened when last i saw her live (bonus, Nels Cline was ALSO in the audience and at one time i vaguely knew him -- as i'd interviewed w/him and chatted w/him a few times). brush with greatness musings... (and they're both such undercover superheroes!!!)

well hello there lil doggy:

how cool is it that music and sound is caused by vibration? today i was thinking about piano, especially matthew shipp and brad mehldau. i was thinking about how the piano is really a percussion instrument. i find that incredibly brilliant. most classicists would put down the idea of the piano just simply being a percussion instrument, because to them...

It's amazing what you can do with a saw and a jug...there's a local band that has incorporated those "instruments" into their shows and records, to great effect...

Have you read any other Kerouac? I've only read On the Road and Dharma Bums...
tunnelslats:
My favorites are the saw and the theremin.
I love the way they sound like a howl.

Thanks for all your birthday wishes yesterday. They meant so much and just proved how kind and caring this SG community is. Thanks again.

Today is bright and beautiful and everything is falling into place once again. Music fills the air and passion drives all I do now. For one of the first times in a long time, I feel like I don't waste days...

I have to declare my love for The Cars. Ric Ocasek is brilliant and their mix of rock and pop music is what defined the coolest band of the '80s. And the fact that all the songs on Heartbreak City were written in '83, my birth year, makes me feel so worthwhile. While there were a lot of great pop bands in the past, few...

Happy birthday!

My favourite age is 26. I like it here. I'm just old enough to pay less for car insurance and rent a fun car for the weekend, but I'm not old enough to be a true adult yet. smile
volkov:
Happy Birthday Kiddo! How can you be this old and have been on SG for so long? :-D

glad things are going well.

ack! you and my little brother have the same birthday...and he's still older than you! hahaha

I just finished watching the second half of "The Miles Davis Story" on Bravo. And while I knew how hip Miles was before, this documentary further clarified everything. And right before I saw it, I was listening to Anti-Pop Consortium's "Tragic Epilogue". And after viewing it, I saw this incredible album in the same light as Miles' attitude and feeling and utter compassion to change...

My composition teacher used his Line 6 delay last night...with his viola. He also uses a little korg number to make some beautifully thrashing sounds. I joined him on laptop. Very fun. He told me I have a "good ear" which is a tremendous thing to hear from him, as he improvises with tons and tons of famous people.

be good

Hmmm... trying to make a very tough decision... delay modeler pedal or digital camera for my birthday... hmmm... mega contemplation going on.... too much for my own good.

See, I already have an analog camera which I get along with fine, but I think I would take many more photos with a digital camera due to its ease of processing. I hate getting the film,...

digital camera all the way... I got one for christmas and I've walked around taking a million pictures and printed them myself. They give you so much more artistic control than just dropping your film off at the local photomat. It's almost as good as having your own darkroom. I have an Olympus D-380, which is pretty spiffy. It's only about $170 on Amazon. Plus, you'll be amazed at how many pictures you can fit on a flash card.
tic_tac_toe:
Well, I don't have a digital camera, but the last time I got my paws on one I wound up taking about 100 pictures of myself (from which the current profile pic is from) really, they bring out the narcissist in me... confused it's quite shameful...

I say be more like Thurston Moore...get the pedal!
