Poem for Nika
Because you are thin bones
Because you wear black
Because of your Texas accent
Because you are adopted
Because you live in Arizona
Because your parents want you away from your crazy birth mother
Because your birth mother reminds me of a woman I knew in Texas
Because you have two jobs
Because you want to pay for college
Because you have a plan to become a pharmacist
Because you want to make lots of money
Because you went out of your way to talk to me
Because you could tell I was bored
Because I'm lonely in this small town
Because maybe you are too
Because I'm thirty-seven
Because I don't even know if I'm spelling your name right
Because you still go to church
Because you thought camping out sounded fun
Because I'm leaving tomorrow
Because you are thin bones
Because you wear black
Because of your Texas accent
Because you are adopted
Because you live in Arizona
Because your parents want you away from your crazy birth mother
Because your birth mother reminds me of a woman I knew in Texas
Because you have two jobs
Because you want to pay for college
Because you have a plan to become a pharmacist
Because you want to make lots of money
Because you went out of your way to talk to me
Because you could tell I was bored
Because I'm lonely in this small town
Because maybe you are too
Because I'm thirty-seven
Because I don't even know if I'm spelling your name right
Because you still go to church
Because you thought camping out sounded fun
Because I'm leaving tomorrow
reminds me of when I lived in Korea.
