When I was a child I had this dream, this certain incredible desire. All I wanted, was to fly through space at light speed. I would look at the starry night sky and imagine what it would be like to raise my arms and take off soaring into the heavens. I would see myself looking down at a receding earth, without loss, without regret. Instead, I would be filled with a simple joy. The joy of freedom from space and time, from mind and body. The joy of pure being...
PURE BEING
...racing through the universe, between the planets and beyond galaxies. Weightless and formless, speeding through space so fast that the emptiness would disappear in a flood of brilliant colour. No thought, no emotion, only the sight, the sound, the experience. The numen.
Some might say that sound cannot travel through space, but I beg to differ. There exists space between the atoms and molecules that make up the matter around us, yet sound travels through them. I think the same might apply to solar systems and galaxies, but on a different scale. If one had the ears of God, one would hear the melodies of the stars and the symphonies of the universe.
And so I dreamed a simple dream of an endless voyage, an endless rush through space. My only desire, that of the experience itself. I wanted to feel the meaning of infinity, of eternity.
INFINITY
ETERNITY
Two words that still embody the same mysteries I wished to explore. I am not sure I knew the meaning of these words then. I wonder if I do now. Perhaps that is why, every once and a while, I look up again at the night sky and smile in wistful remembrance, dreaming once more. Only this time I wonder whether I might get the chance after all, when the sun finally sets on my life and the stars come out for the long night ahead.
