I just finished watching the documentary "The Cove", and to say I was horrified, heart broken and disgusted would be a colossal understatement.
I've seen so many horrible documentaries that expose the horrible truth behind the way some poor creatures are treated, but I honestly had no idea that that cruelty and murder extended to the beautiful and intelligent creatures that are dolphins. Excuse my ignorance, but I never realized that Japan have been slaughtering 250,000 beautiful dolphins every year.
This gave me the biggest wake up call of my life. I have to do something about this, I cannot stand to just sit here and allow this to happen without doing everything within my power to make a difference.
I've already made some positive changes in my own life, some of which include:
1. Switching to Veganism. Hands down the best decision I have ever made.
2. Educating others on the horrible things animals go through
3. Using beauty products that don't test on animals
4. and I'm currently planning a rescue mission for a bunch of bunnies. (The guy who I got my bunny from is a disgusting asshat who is breeding bunnies purely to EAT them. What kind of a sick fuck does that? So I'm currently pulling together a small army of friends to go on a midnight mission to rescue all the bunnies and deliver them into the loving arms of a decent caregiver.)
However, these things simply aren't enough for me. I want to take bigger action, so I've decided to do two things.
Firstly, since next year I begin my three year bachelor of media arts, majoring in Communications to be an investigative journalist, I want to start now. I want to begin my investigative journalism career by exposing the New Zealand meat industry. I want to go back to the source of our meat products and find out just how truthful the claims of "free range" meat and eggs are. I honestly have no idea what the process is for the meat to reach the supermarkets (to be honest I've never even really given it much thought since I never ate meat before I switched to veganism anyway), and I want to find out the truth.
Secondly, I'm going to write passionately worded letters (much like this blog entry) to John Campbell who I know personally (New Zealanders will know who he is), and Jehan Casinader of Close Up on tv one explaining how important it is that we start questioning the origin of our food. How natural it really is, how much of it is actually grown and produced here in New Zealand, what the processes are of our food and what the New Zealand meat and fishery industry is like. Basically I'll be bringing my own investigation to their attention in the hopes they'll throw me a lifeline and help me out.
What do you guys think of all this?
Let me know. Also let me know if you're doing anything to help protect the animals or raise awareness about the horrible things that go on behind the scenes.
