OK, have a listen to this.

You need to let it run at least a minute and a half. A lot of people won't like it, I think. Like some bizarre hybrid of trance-metal, Gregorian chant, and bagpipes - but all done with voices.

(No, I have no idea what it means.)

Some more (but by a different group).

An apology to people:

I may not be prompt in interacting for a while. My use of this site has been via a pattern of behaviour which I've developed to cover the things I'm interested in seeing here. That's just been trashed by the new site layout, and it appears that at least one of those things will not be back.

I already left SG...

Wow! I loved what you sent me. If you hadn't sent those to me, I probably wouldn't be able to communicate with you at all. At least here.
wildswan:
I'm doing better. Shelling out all that money to rebuild my studio and fix the window was a real delight, as is being afraid to wear headphones or play music too loud in the house.

I've been spending time thinking up non-lethal burglary deterrents.

Second interview tomorrow. I am hellish nervous. I would really like to get this job. (I know, I'll look back on this in six months and be "WTF was I thinking"... tongue )

Current listening: Boiled In Lead, Silver. It's a better record than I expected smile

Okay. I am not getting this.

Why is it that people insist on making their vehicles annoying? Mostly with silly exhausts.

What sort of person chooses his vehicle to annoy people? Who he doesn't even know, mostly. I mean, it's not as though he did anything except spend money on it.

On the Interwebs, those people have a name.

He's not very "accessible." My favorite is Infinite Jest and it's 1000[plus] pages! My first reaction is the Oblivion collection. But his pieces in the periodicals he wrote for are probably a good start. He did a piece right after 9/11 in Rolling Stone called "The View From Mrs. Thompson's" that I always thought was pretty accessible. "Brief Interviews With Hideous Men" (1998) might be another.

That last link seems like a pretty comprehensive bibliography. It looks like some of the stuff is even reprinted right there. I'm glad I found that just now!

There go my holiday plans.

I've wanted to visit Krakow for years.

But these arseholes need to understand that their decisions have economic effects.

Thanks! I'm free and I've got my middle finger ready if they even try.

Legally speaking, they can't do anything. When people enlist, there's a cause about being in the inactive reserve for 8 years, even when people think they think they're only signing up for 4. I was in for 9 years, so that's void. Also, I'm technically a disabled veteran (I developed a mild asthmatic condition about three years ago, bah); the military's own regulations prevent re-activating a disabled veteran.

My real concern is that I find myself in a "I need a job" position. Or, at worse, unemployed. And I'd hate to think that I could have gotten *some* job, but was too snobby.

At the same time: these just aren't jobs right? Moving from one assistant prof position to another is *hard.* And uprooting your life to move to some school that you hatehatehate would kind of kill you I think. Ugh.

It's one day at a time right now. Like my friend said: Just because you apply, doesn't mean you get the interview. Just because you get the interview, doesn't mean you get the offer, Just because you have an offer, doesn't mean you need to take it.

I hate being a tool who applies with not much of an interest in going there. BUT, at the same time, I don't really know the place unless I get a chance to go there, meet the people, see the place..... it's a bind. I'm still rolling it all over in my head.
signalnoise:
Your response wasn't wordy at all (anyway, I left a big old huge comment to you first...).

But to respond: yeah, I think everything you said is right. I've basically decided I'm going to apply even to the "iffy" jobs and see what happens. But if the choice is between "shitty job" and bumming around here for another year, sort of broke? I'll *seriously* consider the latter. Like you said, moving to some crappy town, for some creepy school and jackass students? That will fuck you up.

At the end of the day, my job right *now* is getting job interviews, and turning those into offers. What do after that is a concern for another day. One step at a time and that jazz.

Would it be too cynical if I said "smothering"?

I can't imagine this number of deaths in either American or British custody without serious questions being asked. I would very much like to see a statistical breakdown of these deaths by nationality and immigration status. But as I say, perhaps I am too cynical.

hey... just wanted to say good bye before my account runs out (in about 30 minutes or so). You are an interesting person, an intelligent person, I DO think you'll do well in life. We have hashed out a few things on the boards, aaaaand typically don't agree, but I will add that I have learned something from our exchanges. Be well and good luck with all that you are about to take on! wink

Whoa.

Watch it. Srsly.

(Credit: Hunkpapa.)

that pretty much encapsulates my unease about recorded music. If I'd heard that on the radio, or on CD, would I have cared? I don't know.

I'm not hearing that wildswan is any better. I hope she is. Go encourage her to get well, again. Thank you.

The first time I heard this guy it was just an mp3, and he still caught my interest in the same kind of way this video does.

Not nearly to the same extent, however.
