I would like to live somewhere where the nights are actually dark. At least on one side of the house.

Of course, if this goes the way I think it will, that will happen anyway. I may even live to see it. Though by then, I won't want to.

This morning I heard someone on the radio advance the opinion that the USA is a religious nation; and that its primary religion is itself.

I believe this to be an insight. Possibly a great one (though obviously greater to Americans than the rest of us).

Comments, please.

Actual freedom isn't so relevant. I'm really just talking about the general public in the most general sense. If the government commisions a poster like that, they have to be under the impression that "the people" like the idea of being watched or protected by some ever watching government authority.
signalnoise:
No: it's not so bad at all is it? I actually had a pretty flush week, with a few things shaking loose. There are still some more leads out there too, so we'll see what follows through. And in fact, some of what is still out there is REALLY nice.

This is not fun any more.

Further thoughts on this:

I was struck by how dynastic American post-war politics was. The Dulles brothers, lots of Roosevelts... It reinforces what I've heard about an American political class, in a very concrete way.

In other news, that will teach me to make remarks applauding the British climate... frown

haha, my buddy was just asking me last night how long it would take for Obama's tween daughters to run for office.

I think we kinda like royalty, but we want to get rid of them, too. *shrug*

I am convinced my tendency to go north in midwinter is correct. It's a genuine relief to come home - warmer, and longer days.

Meanwhile, I just read this. I was pretty cynical about US foreign policy before. Now I discover it was in large part made by an unaccountable, incompetent agency with a disregard for its own rules and no oversight. Well, I can't...

Your SG bookmarks or all your bookmarks? I never use the SG ones but I would definitely be upset if I lost all my other ones.

I'm trying to get used to these most recent site changes. As usual, I am not a fan. From what I read the intent seems to have been to increase usability but the result seems just the opposite to me.

Hope the new job is going well.

I am not sure if I prefer the original or the Across The Universe version.

Evan Rachel Wood is prettier than John Lennon though.

I am still here.

I forget why.

The recent uber-zot of bald_eagle leaves me certain that at some point, that will happen to me.

OK, fair enough. I know SG is not a democracy.

But bald_eagle's zotting - for no stated reason - makes it clear that the moderators are not the members' friends. And that anyone can be expelled, at any time, without warning,...

Why?

He just wasn't that savoy. He wasn't bad though. He was just neutral. Didn't do anything to make our position in the world better, and didn't do anything to make it worse. Which I guess you could say is a good thing, but I'd like to see a little bit of improvement anyway. Plus, there's the whole notion that he was a domestic president, which he was. He's biggest priorities were domestic. Again, there's nothing wrong with that per se. I would just like more well rounded presidents. That's probably asking way too much though. *shrug*

I really like this concept. Plus, I find sign language to resonate as something very beautiful, with me.

Heroes.

I haven't got many. But, bear in mind, those people have been doing that for a lifetime.

Well.

Now there's a thing.

Four years ago, I commented (to trixel) "there goes the neighbourhood", or something very like it.

Maybe now some of that might begin to seep back.

Wow.

(No, I don't know why I'm still up at 5am either.)

In this case, facsimile was my only option, and I expect to be typing it out myself in the weeks to come. But I do enjoy facsimile texts; there is something warm about handwritten symbols. I did a lot of writing in school and insisted on using a pen and paper. Now, I cannot stand them excepts for the briefest of jots, because my entire writing method has adapted to the non-linearity of cut-and-paste.
