The swoop fly ^^

I saw the coolest swoop fly today.
swoop flies are little flies that are bright yellow and black to imitate wasps but they're really very harmless flies.

harmless flies with amazing flying skills, swoop flies look very pretty, streamlined like a torpedo with bright black and yellow bands across their body.
it's their flying skills that make them so special though, they can fly incredibly fast without making any sound and they love to just hover on the spot to check out their surroundings.
it makes them look like they're just frozen in time in midair.
in fact they fly so fast sometimes it's almost as if they're just warping from one spot to the next, they'll just be hanging completely still and then POW! they're hanging in the air looking around 3ft down the garden path.

hovering and warping aren't their only tricks though, they can lazily mozy through the air and even go backwards at high speed.
i've seen swoop flies hang completely still in the air and then go full reverse to dodge a diving bird trying to get a easy meal only to warp back in the place they were hanging in a second earlier as if to mock the bird.

anyway back to the swoopfly i saw today, swoopies are generally pretty small and slender but this one was big, easily half an inch long.
i was biking down a trail in the park on my way home (i always go home during lunchbreak at work, one of the luxuries of living near)
anyway the forest is a gorgeous lucious green this time of year and sunlight was filtering through the foliage.
and right in the middle of the path was this huge swoop fly, the soft sunlight filtering through the leaves made the little guy look like he was made of liquid gold, it was very beautifull.

it even decided to keep me some company, i was biking straight at it and when i came within 3 feet or so it would quickly fly backwards and hover untill i got close again, jumping backwards like that it stayed ahead of me for almost the entire trail.
i guess it was interested in the bright colors on my T-shirt or something.(flower feeding flies are often attracted to bright colors)

funny how something as little as a pretty fly can cheer up your afternoon, thanks little dude.

Explorers are we, intrepid and bold,
Out in the wild, amongst wonders untold.
Equiped with our wits, a map, and a snack,
We're searching for fun and we're on the right track!
