After twenty minutes of listening to my coffee maker percolate, hum, roar, sputter, and gargle, I realized that I had not placed the lid which filters the water down. Effectively, the water was percolating unto itself (to the tune of losing 1/3rd of the total volume of water initially placed in the contraption).
In conclusion: problem solved, and I have one hellaciously strong cup of black coffee to swill down with these Venezuelan chocolates.
