been working at the new house every spare moment i've had for the last week. painted the baby's room and found something interesting when i pulled up the carpet...
the guy had a dog and there were piss stains all over the carpet in the baby's room, so i pulled it up. the pad was moldy and i'm allergic to mold so i decided to pull up every last scrap of that nasty carpet in the entire house. there are wood floors under that carpet and even though they can use some sanding and refinishing due to age, they're in surprizingly good shape. i now have the carpet and pad up in the bedrooms and i hope the rest of the house is in similar condition. pulling staples and tack strips sucks but it'll be worth it. i do have to get new carpet in the other bedroom though because something was wrong with the foundation or maybe the floor had some water damage, they replaced a 3 ft square with plywood sometime... but that's ok because i don't want to hear my hubby bitch about the cold floor in the morning i think i'm going to wait until i have money for linoleum before i pull the carpet in the kitchen, laundry, and bathroom though. we'll be using the back door more often than the front and i'd like to keep that floor protected, and those areas can be easily closed off from baby. besides, that carpet can be shampooed; the rest is shag and i can't get it clean enough for my liking
i'm debating about painting the living/dining room. the panelling isn't as dark as i thought it was, but it is dirty and i hate panelling. and the kitchen is another story... i don't know if paint will stick to those walls and the cabinets. they're extremely glossy dark wood
it's gonna be great when it's finally done, but it will be a slow painful process... and will continue long after we've moved in. i just want clean floors and walls first i'd eventually like to restore it (HA) to a cross between original (built around '55) and the contemporary style of all my furniture
pics coming soon!
