Today was the graduation ceremony at my favorite school. This is particularly upsetting to me because I only teach up to junior high, so now that these kids are heading to high school, I won't see them anymore. I wasn't nearly as upset at the school yesterday because it's in my neighborhood and I'm sure I'll still see them around (like I do now), but I don't run into the kids from this school.
Japanese graduation ceremonies are a lot more emotional and heartfelt than American ones, and the kids put a lot more work into them: Slide shows, choral numbers, recorder performances, the works!
I think the best part of today was when I signed one boy's yearbook and said to him, "oh, you got a haircut, didn't you?" His reply: "Oh my god, since when do you speak Japanese?!"

You should try NANA, it's one of my favorites right now. The german translation is at tankoban number 7, but i think there is allready number 14 available in japan.
