Lately I've really been questioning the line between natural ability and acquired talent. How much of one do you need, how far can the other take you?
I have things I'm good at. I knit and sew. Make sweaters and costumes. Have sold things and won awards. These are the types of things that come to me pretty easily, so I can learn more and advance my skills.
I have always wanted to be a musician. Ever since junior high when Green Day changed my life (or at least my listening habits), I've wanted to be in a band. I've tried writing lyrics. I took guitar lessons briefly when I was 13, again at 17 during my senior year, and a friend tried to teach me a bit in college. I can't seem to get the hang of it. I know if I practiced more maybe I could, but it keeps crossing my mind that even if I work at it, won't I be overshadowed by the people who get it easily, who it comes to more naturally?
I've been reading up on songwriting lately and have recently produced lyrics a bit more easily than in the past (I never really had much confidence in those either, which further convinced me that I'm not cut out to create songs), but I'd like to be able to put music to them as well. I still dream of being in a band someday. But music doesn't seem to be my field, as much as I love it; crafting does. So is it worth it? Can I become a rock goddess, or do I just continue cultivating the things I excel at and leave music to those who excel at it?
