Vutek had suggested I make a few recommendations of some "wacky documentaries" (in reference to my profile) so here goes.
American Movie:
I'm sure most know of this one, right? It's a doc about a pair of burnt out Wisconsin guys trying to make a horror film. It's great. It's the kind of film where the humor comes from laughing at them more than laughing with them. I would say it almost like the interviews on Comedy Centrals The Daily Show they take themselves seriously but theres no way you can take them seriously.
Home Movie:
Chris Smith who created American Movie does this one. Its the same general type of humor. This doc follows four strange homeowners as they tell you about their homes. Its like a really twisted version of MTV Cribs. Theres a crazy redneck who lives on a houseboat, an old woman who lives in a tree house, an old guy whos house looks like it came out of the Jetsons, a crazy couple who lives in an old missile silo and another couple whos dedicated their home to their dozen or so cats.
Fast Cheap & Out of Control:
This movie follows around strange people with strange professions. Including a guy who makes hedge sculptures (ala Edward Scissorhands), an African Mole Rat specialist, a lion tamer and a robotic engineer. Like most of the documentaries I enjoy, this one is a portrait of really strange people; in this case the people are of the obsessive basement dweller variety picture the Comic Book Guy from the Simpsons.
Trekkies:
This film is what the tittle suggests, a documentary on Trekkies. This is really funny. Put it this way theres one scene where a kid who runs a small town Star Trek convention is reminiscing about the year they had a girl show up and how he hopes she comes back next year.
Stevie:
This one is more on the disturbing edge of wacky, but highly recommended. Its a doc that follows the guy who created the doc Hoop Dreams as he goes back to visit a guy who he was a Big Brother to ten years earlier when he was in college. When I say Big Brother I mean those Big Brothers & Big Sisters programs for underprivileged children. Lets just say in the ten years since hes seen this guy hes been in and out of prison and is just extremely fucked up. It also plays out as a bit of a love story as the relationship between him and his possibly mentally challenged girlfriend is an amazing real life example of everyone finding someone out there whos perfect for them.
Hands on a Hard Body:
Strangely this is not porn as the title might suggest. This doc follows really strange people whore participating in a middle of nowhere small town contest. The contest has each contestant having to keep one hand on a hard body pickup truck for as long as they can and the person who lasts the longest wins the truck. Pardon the expression but this is basically a white trash fest and is a must for mullet fans.
More to come soon. enjoy!
