I can understand that feeling... being separated from yourself by some sort of crust. It also happened to me. I had not thought of hot water as a mean to soften it. I haven't read 'Chaos' for quite some time, so I'm a little vague on details, but it's a beautifully detailed and easily read explanation of chaos theory, and, by extension, fractal mathematics. Julia sets, an in-depth look at the Mandelbrot set, and other fascinating glimpses of iterative math. It's pretty cool.

Other favorites are 'In Search of Schroedinger's Cat' and 'The Holographic Universe.' Both are a little more geared toward quantum physics and the like.

by boy and i have an ongoing thing of trying to figure out what all kinds of food/spice give heat... peppers (all varieties), horseradish, cinnamon, and ginger are all the ones we've come up with... there must be more though right?
