First entry for almost 3 months... quite ridiculous really.
Apologies for the fairly ominous last post, there were some problems in my relationship at the time, and I wasn't quite sure how to deal with it.
Well, I've now moved down to Nottingham to start on my PhD (studying how American cinema has been appropriated and used by other cultures around the world) and that upheaval has been pretty much the main reason I haven't updated on here for a while.
It did mean that the relationship had to end (as she said, a 3 year long distance relationship would be nigh impossible) although I really wish things could have worked out differently. A break-up can be difficult when neither party really wants it to happen.
As for the move, that has went surprisingly well. I've found a room staying with two other Film studies PhD students and been working on becoming part of the study community there (I know that arts PhDs can get extremely lonely so want to make sure I have people around me so we can lend each other support)
And I've been accepted to give conference papers in Ulster and Glasgow, so really pleased that people are interested in what I'm doing. The topic can sometimes seem almost impossible (studying films from a great many cultures that I neither speak the language or have ever visited) but I've been getting great support from my supervisors and feeling more confident about it all.
Organising a night out on Saturday to celebrate my birthday which should be a lot of fun, although she is reluctant to come. I can understand why she feels it might be awkward but I really hope that at some point we can get back some of our friendship and closeness.
Oh, and I went to Dead by Dawn and saw lots of crazy horror films. Actually more low-key than previous years, with films that weren't quite up to it, but still a fantastic weekend. Tony Todd introducing a women in prison, zombie baby, bone-smashing, horror comedy epic that he starred in. What more could you want?
