No, no, that was a fair comparison. I'm basically doing the same sorts of experiments day in and day out, so it gets pretty repetitive. Still, probably a step above a lab tech, depending on the research lab--I do get some degree of creative input, and I'm able to go to conferences and I'm gaining a lot of knowledge about the pharmaceutical industry that I never would have had otherwise. Still kind of monotonous and not really what I want to do, though.
Good luck to your wife in her studies, though. If you're ever looking at moving east, I happen to know of an extremely good, if small, pharma company (both in the sense of good to work for and good business practices, unlike some soulless big-pharma *coughMerckcough*).
More on topic, though, one of the biggest things I miss about school was teaching. I don't get anywhere near the joy out of anything in my life right now as I did from teaching. Good luck with the grants and teaching stipends, though.

So yeah, I'm moving to Cambridge for my (real) postdoc. I don't really count the last year, it's been all just tying up loose ends.

I'm a chemist. Specifically physical organic chemistry, if I can find a school with a professor who's doing the kinds of work I'm interested in. If I can't find one in the Boston area, I will be fairly disappointed! (Not likely to be a problem, though.)
Currently, though, I have my analytical hat on and am playing an anal chemist for small pharma. It's rewarding in its own way, and I love the company, I just hate what I'm doing.

Well, yes, you will graduate. But, let's pretend you are in English. 80% of graduates to not get a TT job. Which translates to things like crap adjuncting, PT jobs with no benefits (the best you can hope for is that you don't have to work at 4 different places).

I dunno if you know, but I live in RI. I've heard that RI was the strip club capital of the US, but I've never seen a damn strip club. Granted, I've only lived here since November (officially anyway) and I live about as far away from Providence as possible (south shore). But I've always wondered about why people said that. I guess Providence is where it's at (I actually went there for only the second time since I've been here last night, and I was only a block or two away from Brown, but I didn't see any strip clubs).
As far as the traffic goes, I think people are on the edge. There's been some major highway construction and re-routes in the past few months and it's made many a Rhode Islander unhappy especially around Providence (from what I've heard on the radio anyway--I usually bypass all that on the way to my grandfathers).
I really wish I had known you were going to be up this direction, we could have hung out.
