Kung Fu Hustle kicks major ass. That is all you need to know.
Also - here's what I'm debating today. Because I'm not hip, I just realized the other day that Lollapalooza is angling to be in Grant Park this summer. I'd have to say, that Lollapalooza is probably not quite my kind of gig usually (people and weather just annoy me.
).
But there are quite a few bands I'd like to see that are scheduled to be there: Weezer, The Kilers, Cake, Billy Idol, Liz Phair, G. Love and Special Sauce, The Black Keys, The Dandy Warhols, and Louis XIV. Plus, I wouldn't mind checking out the Pixes, The Brian Jonestown Massacre or Deathcab for Cutie. I haven't fully decided yet. It's $85 for tickets now, but the event isn't even approved yet. It's a damn conundrum: buy tickets now when they are cheaper, WITH the risk that the city refuses to let them hold the damn thing in the park (which seems unlikely, but then the city REGULARLY turns down these kind of big shows in the park). Plus, while $85 seems like a deal to see all those bands, it's still a lot of scratch for this poor graduate student to toss down for one weekend (and that's before food, drink, and whatever else I find to blow my wad on that weekend).
I dunno. I'm sure I'll live either way.

One last thing to add ... picking only FIVE fave girls gets harder all the time. I'm totally in love with Summer's set. But I love all the girls I have up right now too .... *sigh* .... if only all my stress was as much fun as considering which sexy girl i liked the bestest

i also agree that there is a real assault on the welfare state. i have a pet theory that the goal of tax cuts/large scale executive action (read: wars) is part of bankrupting the government. soon, the only people who will get collective goods (roads, policing) are those that can pay for them out of pocket. it's a bit paranoid i know - but i think it's a dire consequence worth considering, given how things are going.
That's absolutely correct and absolutely not paranoid. The administration has done a very great job at not just attacking the welfare state, but in waging a war on the psychological level. Cheney looked us right in the face when the last budget was proposed, saying that domestic programs wouldn't be cut. The cuts were large by historical comparison, and the only part of the bureaucracy to receive an increase was DHS. Or something close to that. (Maybe it was the state dept. that recieved an increase; I can't remember.)
The war on welfare has obviously been going on since Reagan invented the idea of "welfare queens"; but this, this is unbelievable. My theory is that "Ownership Society" has nothing to do with citizens excercising financial autonomy; it has to do with the rule of the corporation, or ownership: the drug companies, defense contractors, oil companies, and the like. A dark time for our republic; Hamilton smiles.
I would go to the concert. Graduate students don't have enough fun, as far as I can tell!
That is an awesome lineup for a show in Grant Park! Good luck with that one, I don't know that I'd be willing to spend the money not knowing if it is a sure thing. But then again, the price will no doubt go up if it is a go...
