When I was in high school I had to take a long bus ride to and from school. There was this one girl who lived out in the sticks, nowhere near anything. Of course, the bus had to take her home and pick her up every day just like the rest of us. Well, for whatever reason, we all started "booing" her every time she was getting on and off the bus. I don't know how it started or why. I felt pretty bad about doing it, but I was glad to have the negative attention directed at someone else. (I caught enough flak for having funny haircuts)
Eventually, the bus driver had enough and threatened to start taking names. I never talked to that girl, or even knew her name. What a nightmare that must have been. I wonder if she suffered later on because of that. I was picked on a lot myself and hated bullies, so you would think that I wouldn't have joined in. I guess the mob mentality is a hard one to rise above, especially for a kid.
