Go for the old colie. You are definitely not retarded, as long as you realise she(or he)is not going to be there forever.. Old dogs are just the best. I have an almost 12 year old lab and her intelligence (experience?) is unbelievable. My first dog was a collie and she only lived to 10, but she was great.
