The holiday called Christmas is an amalgam of many winter holidays from around the world. The name is designated as a celebration of the birth of Jesus, although the date is not recorded in the Bible, and people at that time did not place particular important on birth dates. Scientists say the actual date was June 17th, 2BC because of the appearance of the star...

Gold Wrapping Paper"

The story goes that some time ago a mother punished her five year old daughter for wasting a roll of expensive gold wrapping paper. Money was tight and she became even more upset when the child used the gold paper to decorate a box to put under the Christmas tree.

Nevertheless, the little girl brought the gift box to her mother the...

Christmas is nearly here and some credit is due to our U.S Service Men and women for our being able to celebrate these festivities. Let's try in this small way to pay a tiny bit of what we owe. Make people stop and think of our heroes, living and dead, who sacrificed themselves for us.

To Wyldewolfe - this is my Christmas gift to you...

I have a guilty secret - I absolutely adore Christmas songs. I don't care if they are cheesy, or non traditional.

I have a huge collection of Christmas CD's. Years ago I worked with this guy from Hawaii - who was a true Renaissance Man - we would work alone in the office on Saturdays - and play Christmas Songs all day long.
We managed...

I have a collection of Christmas songs, too. Dozens upon dozens culled from my collection of live and unreleased music. My latest acquisition is Elton John, Rod Stewart and Gary Glitter on Christmas Eve in 1974 doing White Christmas at one of Elton's shows.

I love the Ella/Louis version of 'Baby, It's Cold Outside,' but there was a film (maybe 1949 or 1950?) that made the song popular that had 2 really good versions in it, one by Ricardo (Fantasy Island) Montalbn and Esther Williams as well as an interesting take by Red Skelton and Betty Garrett. Red is AWESOME in the film, too. HysTERical! And it's probably the best Esther Williams performance I've seen (IMO). She's a professional swimmer who confuses Ricardo (a team captain she wants to meet & Red (who she thinks is Ricardo's character. they all play so well off each other. I have a VHS somewhere and watch it nearly every Christmastime (although it's not REALLY a Christmas movie; it just makes me feel good).

Oddly, I don't recall the name of the film but it is well worth googling and watching. Something about Neptune.

Neptune's Daughter!

ONly there are other older (silent) films with that title that I haven't seen and don't know if they're the same story

Someone told me that that couple who were famous for getting married and for her stupidity a few years back (I forget their names) did a version, too, but since I don't know why they're famous and don't recall either exuding any notable talent or even charisma, who cares?tongue

I think the film also introcuded the song "Slow Boat To China," and although Cold Outside had been around for a few years, it's writer, Frank Loesser (I think I spelled it right), wrote the entire soundtrack, if I'm not mistaken.

Everyone should see the film, although I think I read a review somewhere panning it as mediocre fluff or something. It's not intended to be deep; it's, as I said a VERY well-acted feel-good piece.

And my head's fine - well, as fine it could EVER be - just the usual imperfections I'm used to.tongue

I love the Barenaked Ladies version of Little Drummer Boy.
I have a "Christmas Boogie" mix CD I send out to friends. If you want a copy PM your address.

You Can't Fight Depression on Your Own

Two things happened today that made me want to pound my head against a wall. The first was that I got an email from a friend who said that she is suffering from severe depression, but that friends and family want her to try to "talk herself out of it", and not get involved with medication and therapy....

The gift list of flowers, chocolate and diamonds runs through a man's memory like a ceremonial chant when holidays roll around, but do you know where to deliver the roses to? Or if she'll actually like a sentimental gift that isn't made out of gold? Find these answers and more by delving into the female psyche with Esquire's Guide to Things a Man Should Know...

We must have so kind of psychic connection. I posted a new blog before I read your last comment to me. The things you said directly address what I posted.

The way I feel right now, I don't see things getting better. I appreciate the positive reinforcement that you convey in your comments to me. I'd like to think that they'll be more helpful once I'm more able to reflect on them. At any rate, I want you to know how much I appreciate your words and thoughts.
wsoxfan:
Thank you for the caring and helpful things you said. The things you said about your husband are truly beautiful and mirror my feelings about my late wife, Annette.

While I do recognize the problem, I'm not doing very much about it yet. Hopefully, that will change sooner rather than later.

Before I met the special lady in my life now, I had a relationship with someone who I thought was my savior from depression and inability to move forward after my wife's passing. I convinced myself that this was something other than pure fantasy. I placed so much emphasis on this person that she became probably the most important person in my life. I deluded myself into believing that this person genuinely cared for me, despite evidence that it likely wasn't so.

This person recently chose to no longer maintain any further contact with me on any level. She chose to not even tell me why, which was extremely cruel, whether cruelty was her intention or not. Based on the emotional investment I had in her, the loss of her is staggering. I'm suffering terribly and putting so much emphasis on the loss when I should be concentrating on really critical issues that are having a real impact rather than dealing with a broken heart for someone that wasn't really real in the first place.

I don't expect you to fully understand what or who I'm talking about since we haven't known each other that long, but I hope you get the gist of what I'm talking about at least in a general way. I'd rather not mention this person's name, at least not in a public forum, although some friends that I've known longer would know who I'm talking about. Some other time privately perhaps, although I'm probably better off putting her out of my mind altogether.

I want you to know that you have a knack for saying just the right things that are bound to help me. Thank you for being here for me.

These are definitely things to live by. While I live my life according to many of these "rules", I would be lying if I didn't admit to being deficient with regard to many others.

You're right that the holidays is when you have the opportunity to celebrate them. I got back from being with my family a few hours ago. The atmosphere was every bit as "holiday-like" as if I was there on the actual calendar holiday. There was much love and caring all around. I cherish my time with them regardless of when and for how long I'm with them.

Christmas Season brings with it wonderful spiritual rituals that renew and spark that wonderful feeling of believing. At this time of year, no matter what faith you practice, it seems that there is an increased desire for the abundance of all good things for every single person in the world. Caring about people everywhere is a most worthy intention, desire and feeling.

Our dreams are...

BE THANKFUL

Be thankful that you don't already have everything you desire.
If you did, what would there be to look forward to?

Be thankful when you don't know something,
for it gives you the opportunity to learn.

Be thankful for the difficult times.
During those times you grow.

Be thankful for your limitations,
because they give you opportunities for improvement.

Be thankful for each...

I was pondering the concept of inspiration and the positive force it can be in our lives. Inspiration can enrich your life in so many ways that money cannot reach. Whatever your goal, words of inspiration can be the catalyst that gives you the courage to make things happen.
