As a child of a messed up split parent type situation all I can say is just make sure your son knows you love him (which you're obviously already doing)...thats the most important thing. You're doing right by your kid, the best you can, and that is whats going to make the biggest difference in his life. The rest you can tell him when the time is right. Things will get better
