I know that a lot of people got up in arms over WOTC and their announcing that D&D is under-monetized (myself included, fuck corps LOL), but after thinking about it I understand where they are coming from.
Creating new products is great, but as a general rule the only people who buy new products are the GMs, and once they buy a sourcebook they never need to buy that one again. Apart from dice and minis of their characters, players never buy anything.
Now, do I think they need to do a monthly subscription for the "right" to use their product? No, and I don't see any way they can really enforce that if they tried. But do I think that the people who write these products we all love deserve to be paid for their art? Absolutely!
So there has to be some sort of middle ground, where people don't get gouged for role-playing but the people who actually create the products can still get paid for their time and effort. I don't have an answer, but I can see why they said what they did...
