I went to see my main tattoo artist today (we've been friends for a few years now), talking about the next piece I want to get done, and he asked me if I was OK since I'd been venting a little bit on FB (not naming her name, obviously, cuz we have coworkers on there also), and I told him a little bit of what was going on.
"You should thank her," he said after I got done.
"I'm sorry?" I asked, just a bit confused.
"You should thank her, seriously. What she did to you had nothing to do with you, and everything to do with her; and the way she did it shows a lack of decency and morality. Who knows what she would've done if you guys had actually gotten together? Maybe she would've cheated on you, maybe she would've left you without a reason, maybe she would've just pulled away and left you confused and hurt, even more so than you are now. I'm not saying you should be her friend, but she did you a favor. She showed you who she really is, and what she's capable of. When people do that, you gotta pay attention."
"Huh," I said, giving his words time to sink in. "I guess I've been so focused on my anger and pain I haven't stopped to think about it any other way. To be fair, I didn't WANT to think about it any other way, even though plenty of people have tried to help me."
"You hear what you want to hear when you're ready to hear it, man" he told me.
So, I'm gonna try and take everyone's words to heart. Not saying it's gonna be easy, but I'm gonna try. And I guess that's the best any of us can really do, isn't it?
