I know that my last couple blogs have been heavy/serious, so here's something a little lighter. I like working on my own role-playing game (like D&D), so here's an example of character creation from the game I'm designing :)
So let's say you want to play a Kobold monk. Monk is a hybrid class (Warrior/Psion) so you select 1 Ability from Warrior (First In, increasing your speed by 1 Hex for the first move you make in an encounter), and 2 Abilities from Psion (Mage Hand and Telepathy, allowing you to use those abilities at will, and Solid Minds, giving you a +2 against any ability with the Mental or Enchantment keywords). You take Fortitude and Will as your good defense scores (1 from each class).
Looking at the templates, you are intrigued by the Marksman (ranged striker), so you ask the GM if you can do that and yes you can. For your 2 class feats you take Ki Strike (Monk only ability, allows your Unarmed Strikes to be considered magic) and Unarmed Combatant (allows your unarmed strikes to do lethal damage). For your template/role, you select 3 abilities: Calling You Out (mark an enemy within 5 Hexes, when successfully attacking that enemy you deal an extra 2 points of damage), Reposition (after successfully defeating an enemy, you may Shift 2 Hexes as a free action), and Damage Specialist (you add an additional Attribute modifier to your damage that makes sense for your concept, and you pick Wisdom).
For skills you take Expert in Casting (Psionics) and Unarmed Combat; Trained in Acrobatics, Diplomacy, Athletics, Perception, Survival (Underground), Stealth, Reflexes, Intuition, and Society.
Because your abilities are not considered "normal", you have to take a geas. Working with your GM, you decide on To the Death: once you start attacking an enemy, you can't break off unless they or you are defeated (can't switch targets). This fits your character concept, and can cause problems down the road if you ignore it...or follow it and don't help one of your downed party members.
And there you go. A Kobold Monk who moves quickly around the battlefield, targeting single enemies and blasting them from afar with chi blasts, but capable of defending herself if an enemy gets too close. She gets tunnel vision when it comes to taking down those she attacks, but her party knows that it's a matter of honor for her to be that way.
Well, if you're into that sort of thing, what do you think? I'd love to know :)
