Had a minor Xmas day dinner at my place. The post feast movie being Alex Cox's "Sid and Nancy". Released in 1986 a year before i moved to town. How it reminds me of that New York City I moved to...
Watching the beginning of the movie, there's a dude in the beginning talking to a reporter outside the Chelsea hotel. The guy has blonde cropped hair, eyepatch and biker jacket. There used to be a cartoon mural on St. Marks place of him, white line on black, cartoon red lips with cigarette entitled "Gringo". This guy, John Spacely, used to come ino my office to visit a friend there and always seemed to be a complete operater, junkie, and asshole. The Holiday Cocktail Lounge was his lair -- there's his picture behind the bar. My friend Danny Ray tells a great story about him about how they met, when Spacely tried to steal Danny's sax during a gig, but they ended up being friends anyway.
Anyway, I guess a few years back I had heard that this guy had died of AIDs and even though in whatever personal experience I had with him, the dude completely skeeved me, offended me, and i think, even threatened me on one occasion, it still saddened me. Even the most unworthy of us deserves to be remembered on occasion...
Happy Holidaze all...
