Today was quite productive. I have a GREAT idea for a photo set that will also help me with a final project for photography class (hint: it involves representation!) . Hopefully you'll be seeing "art" at some point.

Today we had a really interesting discussion in medieval manuscript class. There's this weird market of enforced value on manuscripts -- like, one will create an exact facsimile of a manuscript and then the manuscript will be LOCKED AWAY FOREVER BECAUSE IT IS A PRECIOUS ART OBJECT

Doesn't this look like a relatively crappy work of art? It's because the brilliance of craftmanship is completely obscured by the attempts to make it easily accessible.

I'm not really sure where I stand on the issue. I mean, the existence of replicas is so valuable to scholarship -- but there is such a loss of aura and then it becomes this weird issue of what's actually being represented. And ... why the hell are all of these facsimiles multi-thousand dollar projects that aren't readily available to the public?

Someone was saying that another student was criticizing her for "upholding the standards of the bourgeoise" by taking this class. I'm sorry, but WTF MATE? I really... don't understand how the study and critical evaluation of a discipline necessarily implies advocation. I mean, I took a class on Nazism Visual Culture and primarily came away with a love for Anselm Kiefer.

I think that a good friend of mine is about to make a major transition in her life. Luckily, she has lots of friends who think she's awesome and are capable of kicking ass. Or rather, given the self-consciously imposed postmodernist viewpoint...

We can just displace and rationalize it all..

Lighter topics!

And as always, the same deal for the freebies... as always. If you see any photographs that I scanned in my 'scylla's photography' folder that you want, follow one of the links below & sign up for a free trial to one of the offers (the credit card offers always take the longest. Bleh). Then after you get approved by the website, I'll contact you & send you an 8x10 or smaller print (with free shipping). Also, if you yourself complete either the second or third link (personal video player or digital camera), you can get either $450 or $325 instead of the toys. It's really blinging.

Free photo ipods
Free pvps (portable video players)
Cameras4free

And also, if you DO do it... let me know! Oi!
