This year has felt surreal. Strange, like something out of a dream or movie or nightmare at times. I have cried a lot; pandemic chaos, racial injustice and police violence against our own citizens, political vitriol and hate, loved ones suffering - sometimes the world can seem a dismal place.
Many of us here are artists and sensitive people so I know we can be especially affected by the negativity and onslaught of bad news, by the general state of the world. We see beauty in hidden places and are acutely pained by seeing others hurting. Sometimes I practice Tonglen meditation where you breathe in to take away the suffering of others and breathe out the wish to send comfort or happiness or safety to those same people. It’s something to do when it seems there’s not much one can do.
I have had high moments riding my bike through the woods, all alone, where it’s easy to forget for a moment about everything else going on. I’m so grateful for my bike - I never imagined how grateful I’d be just to ride my bike! Finding small pockets of happiness and gratitude is all that keeps me going some days. Being kind IRL to other humans keeps me going. Knowing lots of people who do little acts of good every day that add up to a lot of good deeds in the world keeps me going.
I hope you’re all able to find little moments of gratitude and happiness to keep you going as well. It’s a bizarre time, let’s be gentle with each other and ourselves.
