oddly enough, one of the most effective methods is to actually, attentively *listen*. By making the person be conscious they will become self-conscious and that is usually the very thing they're running away from. most people choose someone to rant to based upon their instinctual awareness that this particular individual doesn't want to hear them in the first place, and so is not going to require any real interaction on their part. you can also say -- "interesting, I'll have to tell my hsbnd about this" -- indicating that you are going to spread their sobstory elsewhere.

then, after a few minutes say: "if you really wanted to talk about this you would pick a time and a person who was capable of giving you their full attention. This is not the time and I am not that person, so please deal with your own denial professionally when you are ready to get real help."
franie:
I know how you feel about the folks in the office. I would just not entertain them by listening to the outside stuff and keep it focused on work. Just my two cents.smile

go vote, peeples!

and try not to destroy the country, kay? remember that politicians serve all their constituents, not simply those who's lifestyles they endorse, or are comfortable with, or who share the same religious beliefs. so fucking bigots and haters need not apply. biggrin we need people who can govern sanely.

great show - it was everything i'd hoped it would be! i was prepared to be disappointed because it wasn't a premium channel show - but other than a bit of cheesy special effects i absolutely loved it. and the special effects were forgivable, the show more than made up for it. people will argue it's formulaic, yea yea yea, we...

just had to school somebody on facebook about how evil abstinence based sex ed is. i forget, living in the northeast, that such idiocy really does exist. to deny young adults the factual information that can protect them from consequences ranging from life altering (at the very least) to fatal, is simply put, evil. it's evil. teens screw each other.(hopefully it's with each other). and...

Yeah I agree, most schools don't do a very good job at all with sex ed. and what they do offer is outdated for the times. In my experience as a teen, I had like no clue on what to do when I stared having sex. And from what I had been told and taught left me feeling ashamed of what I was doing, and I felt like I had to hide it and had no one who I could really talk too. And still today I think that I have some emotional scars and issues with sex because of the way I was taught about it.

Well luckily I'm a virgin. Abstinence education worked for me! I'm waiting until marriage. I'm waiting until marriage to someone I could fall in love with is legal. I'm waiting until marriage is practical and consummated not by a honeymoon, but the heavens. I'm waiting for the stork to notarize my marriage license and for Rush Limbaugh to give the toast. I'm waiting for marriage, because it is realistic, practical, and downright easy.
