What an awesome day it was today! It being Labor Day had nothing to do with it....it was just a spectacular day to be alive and out and about. The temperature was perfect, the sun was bright, the sky was blue and clear of clouds, hawks flew long lazy circles overhead never flapping their wings, just riding on the air currents.....I could go on and on, but I think you get the picture.
I spent a good part of the morning laying out a landscape plan....it's not finished yet....I usually make a few revisions until I get it just the way I want it. But, I have a good start and it's kind of long term project that I don't plan to have finished until this time next year. Mostly because many of the plants and shrubs that I want to put in are becoming hard to get this late in the season.
I went to Des Moines this afternoon to go to the nursery/garden center that I used to work at, to see what they still had on hand. I only came home with one plant and a tree, but it was worth the trip just to get to see some of the people that I used to work with and to talk and catch up with them. The tree is not part of the landscape project....it will be planted on the west side of the house, to replace a tree that was diseased and cut down a year ago.
As I was driving home, I was reminded of how glad I am for the part of the country I live in. Huge sweeping fields of corn and soybeans, interrupted only by the occasional rolling hills, covered with timber. Pastures with cattle and horses, grazing on the late season green grass. People who raise a hand to wave as you go by on the highway...even though you're still 40 miles from home and they don't know you from the next guy. Small towns, each with their own heritage and local pride in their communities. All in all a great place to live, on a great day to be living!

OK, I haven't eaten yet and my stomach is beginning to growl a little....so, I need to see what I can find for supper....something good I hope....
