Bought some new CDs over the weekend and here's the very initial report:
"Feast of Wire" by Calexico - Good so far, seems to be a grower. Has gotten over-the-top reviews (including from our own illustrious O) and I haven't heard that kinda godhead yet, but we'll see. I like it when it's on but, as with alot of "roots" music made by indie types, it sounds a little affected. I'll listen more and report back.
"Sing the Sorrow" by AFI - Not my usual kinda thing but I bought it based on glowing reviews and a friend's recommendation and I'll be damned if it isn't really good at first listen. Pop punk with a goth sheen and an ominous black cover with some "serious" sound effects in the background and overly emotional lyrics. Sounds like a strange combination but it's cool.
"Spend The Night" by the Donnas - The usual Donnas, only with a bigger budget for make-up and overdubs.
The Coral (eponymous debut) - The runt of the litter. Has gotten some decent reviews in the U.S. and much press in the U.K. but I don't hear it. Has that annoying british music hall feel to it. These guys seem to have run outta ideas before they even finished their debut album. I may not even give it a second listen.
HIT LIST:
See above (the AFI and Calexico albums will keep me busy this week)
REAL LIFE:
Saw two movies over the weekend (they both sucked). Got halfway through a new book, "The Ticket Out" by Helen Knode. It's OK so far. I bought it because the author is James Ellroy's wife but this is her first novel and she ain't in his league (but then, who is?). Watched part of the R 'n' R Hall of Fame induction ceremony last night. As expected, it blew. If there's anything worse than 50-60 year old rock stars, it's 50-60 year old rock stars giving themselves awards for music they made when they were 25. None of the acts honored (Clash, Costello, Police, AC/DC) has done anything essential since about 1980. It really was just sad.
FAVE SG OF THE DAY:
In honor of Saint Paddy's Day (since she's got green hair in her set):

THINGS I LIKE:
Listening to the rain beat down in the middle of the night
THINGS I DON'T LIKE:
Listening to my heater making the strange and annoying buzzing sound it's been making lately
PROMISE OF THE DAY:
Concentrate and try really hard to get through "Sea Change" by Beck (I bought it when it first came out and have tried many times to listen to it but find it so slow and boring I have to take it off halfway through). I know I should like it (everyone tells me so, anyway) so I figure it must be me. I will listen until I appreciate it, goddamn it!

But it's good to know, nonetheless.
And don't listen to Cheech; "I Want You" is one of his best songs, EVER!!!!!
