NOTE: The following is most definitely NOT a paid commercial endorsement.
Ive been listening the past few days to the album by a group called The 88. The album is called Kind of Light and it was recommended by super cool member itsalivemedia. I think he does promotion (or something like that) for the group so hes understandably biased. However, based on his generally impeccable taste (Nick Cave excepted) and his enthusiastic endorsement, I bought the record. Boy, am I glad I did!
Its the kind of album you rarely hear anymore. It features highly melodic songwriting and expert musicianship. Itsalive compared the groups sound to Village Green-era Kinks but I think the most spot-on comparison is Mott The Hopple. The lead singers voice is a dead ringer for Ian Hunter and with the way the music hall piano is up-front in the mix, the only thing missing is a cover of All the Young Dudes.
This is great summer music. For anybody who appreciates catchy melodies, Beatlesque harmonies (channeled through Badfinger), and solid playing, with a minimum of concept or attitude, this album is sure to put a smile on your face. Go buy it (and also drop by itsalivemedias journal and tell him your friendly neighborhood souljacker sent you).
