I think the reason why people seem to only complain in their journals is that it's the vacuum that can consume all your negative feelings built up in the day. However, I don't think that's all people do is complain, I think they just need to get their thoughts out of their heads and put in front of their faces, that way they can re-evaluate the situation and then procede to do what they can to change it.
However if that's the the only way others learn about you, it's obvious why you could seem like an entirely different person than what you really are.
I'm glad to hear you're going to take charge though and get things back on track (if they ever were). Many people twice your age don't even have the patience to start.
