I had a big night last night.

A bunch of us went to see ex-member ScarlettJen's band, Dum Viva Disco (Latin for 'as I live I learn') launch their first video clip.

The event was a really interestingly orchestrated affair. While all the members of the band were present, they didn't, at any point, play together as Dum Viva Disco. Instead, they spent the evening teaming up in twos and threes to play songs they had each composed separately.

All of the members of DVD are talented musicians but I'm going to let my bias show here when I say that Jen was a star last night. I've heard Jen singing many times, at parties and informal dinners, and her voice never fails to both impress and entertain me. But last night, sitting up in the nosebleed seats and hearing her sing her own words was a different experience completely.

It's one thing to sit in a room with a musical friend while they strum and pluck their way through some of their favourite songs. It's quite another to see them on stage, playing their own original work and realising just how awesomely talented they are.

I'm pretty smitten by Jen on most days, but last night, like the very best singer-songwriters, she made me fall deeply in love with her. A lot of never-will-be's can get onto a stage and play a song on a guitar, but it takes something special to be able to play the audience like an instrument, to call up emotions like notes on a stave. Jen has that talent and I hope I get to watch her do it again very soon.

After the launch, the party moved on and up a notch. I had plenty of cash to blow and an excess of steam to blow off. I succeeded in both admirably and had a great time with some of the loveliest people I know.

Unfortunately, I am, as one would expect, paying the price this morning. The phrase that found its way out of my mouth to describe how I felt was 'I feel like a used wad of God's toilet paper!'
