The US is really terrible about that. My friend moved to England to marry her fiance and when they came back to visit her family, they wanted to deny him entry, but let her through because she was US born. They can turn you away with no reason even after you've already flown in and have no way of knowing you won't be stopped otherwise. It really is a gamble. Don't risk all that money.
